In the past, at this location there was an ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store. According to http://www.abcfws.com/content.jsp?pageName=OurHistory many ABC stores had attached lounges. When I visited Melbourne during the summer of 1994, this store was one of the last ABC stores that still had an attached nightclub. There were two front entrances, one for the store, and the other for the club. There was also a back entrance to the club. Inside there was a doorway between the club and the store. There was a bouncer posted at the doorway. Among the beers that were available in the store, there was ABC Beer, ABC Light, ABC Ale, and ABC Malt Liquor which were brewed by Florida Brewing in Auburndale, FL.
The club at this location was called JD Penguins. There was a disc jockey playing dance music. In the center of the club, there was a circular dance floor. The bar revolved around the dance floor. It took about twenty minutes for the bar to make one complete revolution.
About two years ago when I went to Melbourne, I went to the ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store near the intersection of Hibiscus Boulevard and Babcock Street (28.084564, -80.621433) to check out the selection of microbrews. At the checkout counter, I asked the clerk if the other ABC store in town still had a JD Penguin’s nightclub. He was younger than me and did not know what I was talking about. The other clerk was around my age. He laughed and told the younger clerk about the attached lounges.
