It worked like this:
You set up a priceline.com grocery account with a credit card.
At priceline.com you selected grocery items you wanted to purchase.
Example: 14 oz. bottle of ketchup
priceline.com would ask you to select two brands from a list of three.
Example: Heinz, Hunts and Del Monte. You select Heinz and Hunts
They gave you a price range, and prompted you to “name your own price”, within the range. After you named your price, your screen displayed gimmick looking slot machine wheels rolling. They would inform you whether or not you got the item at the price you named. If you got it, they specified the brand.
Example: 14 oz. bottle of Hunts Ketchup
At the conclusion of a session, you were given a list of items to take to a participating grocery store. At the store, you retrieved the exact items on the list (absolutely no substitutions) from the store shelves. At the grocery store, you were able to get some or all of the items. At the checkout, you had to separate your priceline.com groceries from your other purchases. The cashier rang up your priceline.com groceries, you used your WebHouse ClubCard like a debit card (with a PIN). At this point priceline.com debited your credit card for the items that you purchased online through priceline.com. The cashier then rang up your other groceries for which you paid separately.
For the short time this was available, it was great. I remember saving a lot of money on disposable diapers.
