Most websites include “Ac-a-me” instead of Acme. I just checked the Acme Supermarket website. The Acme Supermarket closest to Scranton is in Blairstown, NJ. They mention locals referring to Nanticoke as “Nanny-coke” and Throop (with a silent “h”) as “Ta-roop”. These are towns that are hardly mentioned outside of Northeastern PA.
I lived in Olyphant until I was 22, including two years when I was a student at Penn State in University Park because I was still a resident of Olyphant. I lived in Plano, TX for two years. I moved back to Olyphant when I was 24. I moved to the Atlantic City area when I was 29, and I’ve lived here ever since. Therefore, I’ve lived outside of Northeastern PA longer than I lived in Northeastern PA.
Here are five instances outside of Northeastern PA when it was apparent that my speech was different, but not in the ways that the residents would think:
1. At work in Texas, I referred to a fire station as a “hose house”, and got a lot of laughs.
2. I said that someone “took” a heart attack. A former resident of Inkerman told me to say “had a heart attack” or “suffered a heart attack.”
3. When we returned from the supermarket, I told my wife, Margi, that I would help her “hide” the groceries. She laughed and said, “Hide them where?” She told me that you “hide” things that you don’t want other people to find; otherwise, you put things away.
4. My wife and I were going to have a party. I asked her, how many “trays” of pizza I should order. She told me how many “pies” to order.
5. A dentist in Galloway, NJ told me that he went to dental school in Buffalo, NY. He asked me if I was from Buffalo because of my accent.
